Teacher educators' beliefs regarding students' English language level from the first to third semesters of the BA in ELT program at UNACH

Inglés Presencial Presentación Foro de investigadores en enseñanza de lenguas.

Having A2 English proficiency and graduating with a B2 level are two of the requirements for permanency into the Bachelor in English Language Teaching (BA in ELT) in the Language Faculty at the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas. Despite continuing to operate under the 2006 program, the BA in ELT has undergone some adjustments which have influenced English teachers’ beliefs. These changes include, the online classes established as a result of COVID-19, the Rechazo Cero academic offer that has been required by the Mexican government for the past two years, and the alternative for students to choose their preferred English certification to earn the ELT degree. There has been little discussion of teachers' beliefs regarding students' English proficiency in higher education, particularly in Chiapas. Through semi-structured interviews and narratives, this qualitative research examines five teachers' beliefs about the English level proficiency of students enrolled in the first three semesters of the BA in ELT, as well as suggestions to overcome the students' English level. This research gave voice to teacher educators from Tuxtla Gutiérrez whose beliefs influence the educational program of the BA in ELT.The awareness of the beliefs of these teacher educators will contribute to understanding more clearly the teachers’ role in the program and the development of an English leveling workshop for students to meet the language standards within the ELT program.
