The compilation of a Mexican learners’ spoken corpus

Inglés Presencial Presentación Foro de investigadores en enseñanza de lenguas.

A corpus can be defined as “a set of machine-readable texts which is deemed an appropriate basis on which to study a specific set of research questions” (McEnery & Hardie,2012, p.1). This presentation is about an ongoing project, The Mexican Learner Corpus (MexLeC), to create an initial 150000 word corpus of spoken English by Mexican learners. This longitudinal project is led by Dr. Abigahil Flores, a postdoctoral student at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. We collaborate on this project to build our own learners´ spoken corpus at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. The corpus was started in 2022 with 22 interviews conducted to A2 students in the BA in English Language Teaching. The second collection consisted of 94 interviews. The first set of interviews were conducted by the team leader and a couple of her students via Zoom and they were recorded with the students’ consent. The second set were conducted by the three researchers participating in this study. The interview consisted of four sections to elicit the data; it lasted about 12-16 minutes. The interviews were transcribed following the guidelines provided by the team leader and which were adapted from the Trinity Lancaster Corpus (Gablasova, Brezina y McEnery, 2019) and the LINDSEI Corpus (Center for English Corpus Linguistics, 2021). This presentation contributes to the general aim of the project, which is to facilitate access to a learner corpus that can be used to explore different research areas.
